A few dozen people gathered Tuesday night at the beginning of Hanukah to watch a block of ice be transformed into a giant Menorah in Mamaroneck by sculptor Mark McKenzie.
Village Mayor Norm Rosenblum later lit the candles at Chabad Lubavitch of Larchmont and Mamaroneck’s new home at 921 W. Boston Post Road.
“Hanukkah, the holiday, represents the fun part of Judaism,” said Rabbi Mendel Silberstein to those gathered.
Chabad has moved around a lot over the years, sometimes taking the Former Tung Hoy space (now a Bank of America) or a storefront that’s now a Sleepy’s during Holiday periods.
The new HQ is directly across the street from Mamaroneck High School.
The group was founded by Silberstein and his wife, Chana in 2006.
