Preservation: Loew’s Theater, New Rochelle

The former Loew’s Theater at 585-599 Main Street in New Rochelle was built in 1926. Architect H.J. Krapp (really) designed it in the Eclectic Style, with elements of Spanish and Rococo design. New Rochelle historian Barbara Davis says the Loews is a particular ornate example of 1920s movie house design. The theater originally accommodated 2,500 theater-goers and required a staff of 75, including 25 – 30 ushers. Its last incarnation in the early 2000’s was as a nightclub.
