Look Both Ways: Creating a School Zone

For years, the Safe Routes to School Committee for Larchmont/Mamaroneck Schools has advocated making the Boston Post Road from Mamaroneck High School west to Hommocks Middle School a “School Zone,” where traffic would be required to slow down signifcantly from 7 am to 4 pm on school days. But the Post Road is owned by the State. And that’s made this difficult.

“With three district schools nearby, hundreds of students and community members walk this area daily,” says Kim Larsen,  Chair of the Committee. “The Committee has had an ongoing concern about safety between Hommocks School and the Mamaroneck High School.”

Now,  Assemblyman George Latimer plans to submit legislation that would create a school zone there after the State Dept. of Transportation rejected a similar request from the Village of Mamaroneck.
