Coming Up: A Commercial-free Zone for Kids at Sheldrake

This time of year all of us are experiencing consumer overload, but for kids it can be especially hard to find a commercial-free zone. Fortunately we need look no further than the outdoor trails at the beautiful Larchmont Reservoir where the Sheldrake Environmental Center runs its December Vacation Camp.
“The perfect antidote to holiday commercialism is Vacation Camp,” says Holly Moskow, Executive Director of the Center. “It’s such a great time to get back outside and explore nature. Kids will go on nature hunts to make discoveries. Who’s awake and who’s asleep? They’ll find winter birds, insects, and egg cases. They’ll look for rabbits, deer, mice, chipmunks and squirrels, and if there’s snow, they’ll find some tracks.”
The December camp activities are for kids ages 3-5 and 6-8, running Monday through Friday, starting 12/24 to 12/28 ( no class on 12/25). A daily option also is available.
The kids will stay warm indoors at the nature center where it’s nice and cozy… for story time, eco-crafts and more. The camp day starts at 9:30 to 12:30 for ages 3-5, and from 1:15 to 4:15 for ages 6-8.
Sheldrake Environmental Center is a non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire environmental awareness and action in the community, and to preserve, protect and enhance local environmental resources such as the Sheldrake River ( at right).
The center is located at 685 Weaver Street in Larchmont, NY. More information on Sheldrake and its programs can be obtained by visiting www.sheldrakecenter.org, by calling (914) 834-1443, or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
