Update: Money to Save Mamk Teams Rolling In

JV Soccer is on the chopping block

Update: Organizers say donors are responding to their efforts, with $1,350 collected in the first three days of the fundraising campaign.

MAMARONECK  — Mamaroneck School District parents are trying to raise $30,000 by August 1 to reinstate seven student sports teams eliminated under the 2011-12 budget.

Following an email from District Superintendent Robert Shaps outlining the rules for such fundraising, organizers on Tuesday sent out an email of their own, asking parents to support their cause.

“As a community that prides itself on strong academics and athletics, we are seeking donations to support our children during the upcoming school year,” the email said.

Under the terms of the fundraising established by the district, the Board of Education would accept a gift of the $30,000 needed to restore all the teams slated for elimination: modified field hockey (second team); junior varsity boys soccer (second team); modified girls volleyball (second team); freshman boys basketball; freshman baseball; and modified softball (second team). The three modified teams are offered at Hommocks Middle School. The others are Mamaroneck High School teams.

The Board will not accept donations on a sport-by-sport basis, Dr. Shaps said.

The $30,000 represents a portion of the $70,000 the district needs to operate the seven teams, he said. The remaining portion would be funded through previous donations made for the same purpose.

Individuals interested in donating can send checks made payable to MUFSD to Diane Muratore, 651 Baldwin Place, Mamaroneck NY 10543. Or, for more information, contact Athletic Director Bari Suman at 220-3161.
