75 years ago in Larchmont, an affluent group of men would gather monthly for dinner on (how un pc it sounds now) the maid’s night off.
Eventually they put these little nights out to good use by collecting enough money each year to provide College scholarships to 25 deserving Mamaroneck High School Students.
The group morphed into the men’s only (until surprisingly recently) University Club of Larchmont.
But now, the University Club is a vibrant organization, that raised $30,000 in scholarship money last year. And with a female president, the dynamic Ellen Payne, an executive at Hearst Magazines.
Meetings, several times a year, usually include dinner and a local mover and shaker as speaker. (I hear an annual party called the Snowflake Ball is fun as well, though I am sworn to secrecy.)
Last night’s event at the Larchmont Yacht Club featured a talk by Tracy Gardner, former President of J.Crew, and a resident of Larchmont. Her beautifully told tale of a fascinating journey through the world of American retail was as hilarious as it was inspiring.
Membership in the University Club of Larchmont is $50 annually, with a $150 minimum donation to the scholarship fund. More info at the link above.
