The New Rochelle Police Department says a 20-year veteran of the force has died of a 9/11 related illness.

“On August 16, 2018, after a long and courageous battle, Officer Kathleen O’Connor died as a result of a 9/11 related illness,” the department announces in a press release.

Officer O’Connor began her career in January 1998, and was most recently assigned as the Warrant Officer in the Department’s Criminal Investigations Division. After the September 11th Terrorist Attack of the World Trade Center, Officer O’Connor responded to Ground Zero to assist with the rescue and recovery efforts. She volunteered her time to help other first responders sift through the debris piles.

“The Department’s thoughts and prayers are with Kathy’s husband, Anthony Funigiello, and family,” it says.
