The Mamaroneck Wrestling Team are Edgemont Tourney Champions, first out of 19 teams.Coach Anthony Vitti tells us that “a HUGE comeback in the finals got us over the top! Most exciting finals I have ever seen.”
Highlights from the coaches:
1) Andres Pedraza (pictured, left) pins his way throughout tournament from 3rd seed. He set the school season record in the semi’s with his 20th pin and continued that into the finals with #21. He added to his already school career record for pins. Athlete of week!
2) Peter Fanelli upsets top seed and section 9 champ from Tuxedo in semifinals and pins his opponent in the finals
3) Troy Whittemore wins the tourney for the second straight year with a huge pin in the finals.
4) Ben Miller has a great day making the finals before falling to one of the tournament’s best wrestlers from Horace Mann (A senior).
“We did all of this with only 14 of 17 possible wrestlers while the 2nd/3rd place teams had full lineups. Very impressive,” Vitti said.
Mamaroneck won the Eric Kantor Sportsmanship award for best exemplifying sportsmanship on the day. The award was voted on by the officials.
“This has been probably the greatest week in the history of our sport at Mamaroneck,” said Vitti. ” Our team is currently 14-4 on the season and has won two tourneys and place top 4 in every one.”
