Larchmont Teens Bike U.S. for Local Charities

Lucas and Alexandre Zabotin

Larchmont ‘s Lucas and Alexandre Zabotin, brothers and students at the French-American School of New York, leave this Saturday for a coast-to-coast bike ride to raise money for the Food Bank for Westchester and Larchmont Pet Rescue — and see the southern U.S. while they’re at it.

“We are really excited to ride across the country, and to challenge ourselves physically. This trip allows us to combine our passion for travel and sports with our interest in helping others. The best part is that we are doing this together,” said Sacha Zabotin, as Alexandre is known.  Sacha, 17, is a rising senior at FASNY.

The two charities are close to the Zabotin brothers’ hearts. Their family has adopted pets from Larchmont Pet Rescue.  And, for his 10th grade internship, Lucas, 15, volunteered for the Food Bank in a one-day program.

The bike trip starts in Charleston, South Carolina and ends in San Diego.  The Zabotins will be part of a group of 12 students who will bike an average of 85 miles per day. The trip is organized by Apogee Adventures, a Maine-based company that leads hiking, biking and other outdoor adventures in the U.S. for young adults who, in turn, make their trip a community service effort.

“Apogee means highest or farthest point.  The kids that do this trip will reach their own new heights,” says Apogee founder Kevin Cashman. Kids on Apogee trips have raised money for numerous causes including cancer and Darfur refugees.  “It’s win-win for everyone.  Lucas and Sacha will have a rewarding experience while supporting charities important to them and their community.”

Jeanne Wilcox, communications manager for Food Bank for Westchester, praised the boys effort, explaining that 200,000 Westchester residents are hungry or at-risk of hunger. Nearly half of them are seniors and one-third are children, she said.

The Food Bank for Westchester is delighted that Sacha and Lucas have made hunger their cause, and we wish them Godspeed on their bicycle journey across our great country,” Wilcox said.
