A fire in a third floor apartment at 1912 Palmer Avenue in Larchmont Sunday morning has left the residents of twelve units homeless.

The residents, including a few families, were evacuated safely after the blaze began at about 3:00 am. The cause remains under investigation.

Larchmont Fire Chief John Caparelli said the “whole third floor was destroyed, and the second and first floors and the stores below sustained severe damage from water and smoke.” The only injury reported was to a firefighter from one of eight local units that fought the fire.

Caparelli said the fire became too intense to fight from the inside, and firefighters had to extinguish it from the street until it was safe to re-enter.

Two stores, Love Shoes and Love Bella remain closed as damage is being assessed.

Local residents scrambled to help. An inpromptu clothing and blanket drive organized by Mayor Lorraine Walsh brought donations to the fire house, and all residents found temporary housing.

“Right now we are swamped and need to store what has been brought in the fire department until people have the time to go through and they also need to get settled before they can take bedding etc.” Mayor Walsh posted on Facebook Sunday afternoon.
