James Marquardt Purcell, 90, Awarded WWII Honors

James Marquardt Purcell, 90, of Rye, NY, died peacefully at home on June 18, 2011, with his beloved wife of 66 years, Geraldine Ryan at his side. James was the loving father of his 11 children: Jim, John, Patrick, Tom, Geraldine, Bob, Bill, Mae, Vin, Joe, and George. Jim is also survived by 31 grand children and 13 great grand children. Born in Chicago, IL on May 3, 1921, Jim was the oldest of five children born to Ethel and James Grinnell Purcell.
Jim moved to Larchmont, NY at age 10. Jim personified “the greatest generation”, as a Captain and B-17 pilot during WWII. He led 28 missions over Germany and for his valor and bravery was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses. After a successful career with C.W. Ryan in the Insurance industry through 1970, Jim opted for Wall Street, when he inherited his father’s seat on the New York Stock Exchange. Jim worked there until his retirement in 1988. A Mass will be held at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye, NY. Visiting hours are planned for Graham Funeral Home on Wednesday beginning at 7PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to his Alma Mater, the University of Notre Dame.
