It strikes me as ironic that my neighbors and I have been ticketed for leaving our cars out between 3-6 a.m. on our barely traveled cul-de-sac
Leaf pickup last season I(Lundy Lane: Larchmont mailing address, but actually in the unincorporated area of Mamaroneck), where they do not hurt or obstruct anyone or anything, while the Town of Mamaroneck has not only left hundreds of piles of leaves around--it has done so in a terribly unsafe way. Now, most of the piles are lined up along both sides of our busy, and often narrow and windy roads, forcing cars in both directions toward the middle, and increasing the chances of an avoidable accident.
Harrison Drive is a perfect example. It is hilly, winding, and has a hairpin turn in it. Without the challenges posed by the long left piles of leaves, it requires one's full attention to navigate. Being forced to move to its middle practically guarantees a future tragedy.
Has the Town never heard of making a leaf-pile pickup more than once per season? Has the Town never heard of prioritizing its understandably limited resources to value public safety over revenue gained from issuing tickets based on a useless and irrelevant law? Has the Town any idea of how much it stands to lose once a justifiable lawsuit is filed against after its outdated and dangerous leaf-pile policy caused a resident serious injury or death?
Come on, people. Stop being penny-wise and pound-foolish. Time is running out.

... The leaves used to be picked up two or three times a season. This year, it seems to have dwindled to only once, leaving streets clogged with leaves and very little parking! |

... Odd, actually - I thought left-pickup was a "guaranteed overtime" deal for municipal workers who therefore ought to be out there every day! In my village (Pleasantville) it's a Murphy's Law kind of a thing - if I rake my leaves into a roadside pile, the wind picks up immediately to blow them elsewhere. And, if elsewhere happens to be my front sidewalk, then the village can fine me for the obstruction. I have grown to prefer leaf bags, frankly (though fortunately I have a small piece of property. |
