Larchmont Fire fighters told us Saturday they have given away so many free carbon monoxide detectors
In response
to the tragic
death of a former Larchmont resident and her family in Aspen, Colorado on
Thanksgiving, "that Mayor Feld ran out today and bought another batch." A group of friends of the Feuerbach family purchased dozens of carbon monoxide detectors, which are being given away at the Larchmont Fire house. Firefighters are available to help with questions on installation and maintenance of the devices.

According to reports the Colorado State Legislature has introduced the Lofgren Family Home Safety Act, which would require all new homes and homes for sale in that State to have a carbon monoxide detector. If passed, Colorado will be the 18th state to have such a law.

Carbon monoxide is an odorless gas. Low level carbon monoxide poisoning can occur
over months, with no signs to a home’s residents other than persistent
headaches or drowsiness. If you have any concerns, the Larchmont
Fire Department will do a free inspection of your home.

... The Sound & Town claims the CO detectors are free only to residents of Larchmont !! EDITRIX: untrue. yet another reason not to read it. |
|
... There will be a memorial service for the Lofgren Famly on Tuesday 12-16-08, 10:00 am at St. Augustine's Church on Larchmont Avenue. |
|
... Do you have to be a Larchmont resident? How about residents of New Rochelle? EDITRIX: I do not think it would be in the spirit of those donors to turn anyone away! |

... I have been encouraged to learn that there is a strong push in support of "The Lofgren Family Memorial Act" in Colorado and that a number of the carbon monoxide (CO) detector manufacturers are behind the effort. Last year, a bill mandating that CO detectors be intstalled in what I understand to be newly constructed homes and existing homes that are sold was defeated in Colorado (CO) and similar legislation was vetoed by Hon. Arnold Schwarzenegger in California. Apparently the real estate and construction interests out West were too strong last time. Had the bill passed in Colorado, or, had there been a CO detector(s) in the nearly $9million dollar home that Caroline Feurbach Lofgren and her beautiful family had won the chance to stay in in Aspen, perhaps their lives would have been saved. As a former insurance defense litigator and residential property manager in Manhattan where every co-op apartment had to have a CO detector in the unit I can say that this was preventible. Friends of the Lofgrens are working hard to circle the wagons to support this bill. We have contacted Hon. Nita M. Lowey's office and her staff is looking into federal legislation. US Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota has sponsored Senate Bill 3660 "The Residential Carbon Monoxide Bill" which will require CO detectors to meet required standards but only encourage States to require CO detectors in homes. Not enough but a start ad Caroline's friends are working with their local officials to push for residential CO detector requirements. I don't think anyone ever thinks that something like this could happen, happen to someone you know or happen to someone you love but it did and something good will come of it. EDITRIX: thank you jon. and apologies to those who receive our friday loop scoop newsletter that i referred to Carbon Monoxide as CO2. It is CO. |
