Or, or, Loop Reporter becomes media darling in 4 easy steps.
It all began with Timothy Geithner selling his house. Loop News reporter Maura Carlin thought to ask Loop Real Estate reporter Debbie Meiliken if the sales price on the Treasury Secretary's Larchmont home was an indicator of where he thought the economy was headed. "Who is Timothy Geithner?" she asked. She researched, and we posted the story . The next day, our piece was picked up by the Associated Press. Many people saw it in the Journal News, but it was written by the AP. From there, a headline in the New York Post screamed, "For Sale Sign at Geithner's ." And everyone was quoting Debbie (an agent at Keller Williams in White Plains), who was telling the world the house was priced competitively. Larchmont real estate agents weren't pleased. So what did she do? She went on Fox News. Another round this month: Geithner decides to rent. Always at the cutting edge, theLoop doesn't think it's much of a story. Then I read it in the San Jose Mercury News. By now, Debbie is in the rolodex of every assignment editor in New York. The New York Times interviewed her last week about how she uses the internet to market her property listings and herself. Does it end with The New York Times? Apparently not. Tuesday, The Daily Show's John Oliver was in Debbie's office, asking questions like, "Why is Larchmont different than the rest of America?" A Daily Show video crew will reportedly be in Larchmont in the next few days. They want to talk to her about foreclosures. They want to talk about Larchmont. They will be touring a house on the market in the Murray Avenue school district whose asking price is $1,350,000.
Maybe Tim Geithner knows if it's priced to sell.

... Anyone who has lived in Larchmont for a while knows that Larchmont really is different from the rest of America, and a lot nicer to live in than much of the rest of it is. |

... Perhaps an agent from another community commenting in the "media" about a property she had no involvement in listing, marketing, purchasing or renting appears more than a little unseemly. The fact that a real estate professional needs to be told that Timothy Geithner is the Secretary of the Treasury at a time when he is devising plans specifically to help the housing market is a story worthy of "The Daily Show". Only the agents representing the homeowners know their ultimate motivation - perhaps they were planning on renting all along and they were hoping an out-of-town agent would come in and give them their asking price while they tested the market. Suggesting that a home was "competitvely priced" when it didn't sell puts the agent on a long thin branch. Leveraging that position to become a media talking head seems to be new twist on post modern humor. It also suggests that working with a local agent who knows the market well benefits both the buyer and the seller. |
...'Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all.' - Dale Carnegie Accuracy - The house is in the Unincorporated Area of Town of Mamaroneck. Its residents get their mail delivered by the Post Office located in the Village of Larchmont. Oh, Oreo will not be available for the Daily Show. |
