As journalists, we are often aware of the impact our stories can have. But the Journal News could not possibly have predicted the more personal consequences of publishing the Westchester pistol permit holders’ map.
According to the report, one out of every 23 adults in the lower Hudson area– Westchester, Rockland and Putnam– is licensed to own a handgun.
So far, the publisher’s photo and address have been publicized, children of Gannett employees exposed on line and a mysterious white powder was discovered at JN HQ in White Plains, all presumably, by readers opposed to the “outing.”
Putnam is now refusing to release its data to the JN. The data is public information.
Was it worth it?
