George Straehle, a lifelong resident of New Rochelle, died on November 21, 2011. He was 86.
George was born on May 18, 1925 in New Rochelle, to the late Martin Thomas and Rose (Maurer) Straehle. He graduated from Issac Young High School where he excelled in Football and Baseball. He served in the Navy during WWII in the Armored Guard Division. After his discharge he attended Iona College where he was recruited by the Boston Red Sox. He was a New Rochelle Police officer for over 30 years of which he served for several years in the Detective Division. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 8, the Police Emerald Society, the Elks Club, the Irish Benevolent Society, and the VFW.
He is survived by his wife the former Joan Sears; his seven children George (Patty Ann) M. Straehle Jr., Pattie Straehle, Paul (Debbie) Vergara, Jean (Paolo) Vergara-Blower, Don (Ann Marie) Vergara, Kathy(Paul) Vergara- Clancy and Amy Straehle; thirteen grand children, seven great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother Thomas. He loved his country, family, and friends and had a passion for his dog, Holly. The family wishes to extend its appreciation to Hospice and Palliative Care of Westchester.
Visiting will be Friday 2-4 & 6-9pm at Lloyd Maxcy & Sons Beauchamp Chapel, 16 Shea Place, New Rochelle. A funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday 10:00 AM at Holy Name Church. Interment will follow at Beechwoods Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The New Rochelle Humane Society or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Westchester, 311 North Street, Suite 204, White Plains, NY, 10605 in appreciation for their help during these difficult times.
