Another wrong way crash on a Westchester highway hit close to home over the weekend…when a woman traveled several up I-95 from the Bronx….in the southbound lanes…before a horrific head-on collision just south of the Larchmont toll plaza.

A tow truck operator from Vincent’s Garage in Vincent Mamaroneck had the sad duty, and was interviewed on local New York City TV news.

Police say Tanisha Gomez drove at least six miles the wrong way on Interstate 95 when it struck a 2005 Nissan on the southbound side of I-95 at about 4:30 a.m. on Sunday in New Rochelle.

Two people in the Nissan were trapped inside and had to be cut out of the vehicle.

The driver of the Nissan, Mark Toppin, 29, of Elizabeth, NJ is recovering at Jacobi Medical Centerwith a broken leg.

His passenger, Reginald Lee, 29, died in the accident.

Tanisha Gomez of East Stroudsburg, PA is at Jacobi Medical Center with internal injuries. She is expected to survive.

Gomez was driving a rental car. Charges against her are pending.

Police are investigating whether or not she was drinking at the time of the accident.

This is the third high-profile head on collision in Westchester County in two years.

This week is the two year anniversary of the crash that killed eight people on the Taconic Parkway.

The driver was apparently under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Just last week, a man was charged with DWI after crashing into a police cruiser on the Bronx River Parkway in Scarsdale.

  1. What we need is far more enforcement of DWI and DUI laws, and far stricter penalties for those who fail to obey the law and thus endanger others as well as themselves.
