Denise Harkins Cruickshank (1928-2011)


Denise Harkins Cruickshank, 83, of Scarsdale and Larchmont, NY, passed

away on 2 August 2011 in her home in New Rochelle, NY, after several

bouts of pneumonia.

Daughter of Robert H. and Julia (Teevan) Harkins, Denise was born in

New York on July 24, 1928, grew up in Pelham, NY and Oliverea, NY.

Denise earned a Bachelor of Arts from Marymount College and a Master

of Arts from Teachers College of Columbia University where she was

initiated by the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society in Education. She was

married to Robert F. Cruickshank of Forest Hills, NY, for 30 years,

and with dear friends and loving family raised 7 children.

Denise was Director of Volunteer Services and managed many fundraising

special events for the Visiting Nurse Service of NY. She was an

active board member of the Volunteer Referral Center and the Four

Charities Thrift Shop in Manhattan.

Denise was instrumental in recruiting others. Whether raising children

or funds she worked for love. She stayed with whatever she started.

She began her career as a teacher and continued teaching and inspiring

all whom she met. Many have said there is no one like her, that they

never met anyone outside their family so kind and supportive. She was a

huge contributor to the lives of others. Her legacy will endure.

Denise is survived by her 7 children, 12 grandchildren, brother Herb

Harkins and sisters Anne Ruthling and Joan Tumblety, numerous nieces

and nephews and many friends, some who still think of her as a 2nd


A visitation will be held from 4-6 and 7-9 PM on Thursday 4 August at

the Fox Funeral Home, 2080 Boston Post Road Larchmont, NY 10538.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM on Friday 5 August at St.

John’s Church, 4 Fountain Sq, Larchmont, NY 10538. A memorial and

internment service will be held in Oliverea, NY at a future date.

Donations may be made in her name to the Alzheimer’s Foundation or the Visiting Nurse Service of New York.
