The Department says this is "the first confirmed report of a rabid coyote in Westchester."

Officials are urging anyone in the area who had contact with a coyote to call the County Health Department immediately at 914.813.5000, 24-hours a day. Rabies treatment is said to be 100% effective when administered before symptoms develop. Once symptoms occur in animals or humans, says Commissioner Dr. Cheryl Archbald, the disease is fatal.

Unusual behavior may be the first sign of rabies in an animal. The coyote caught Monday was reportedly biting off the head of its cub.

For more information about rabies and its prevention, residents can call the Rabies Infoline at (914) 813-5010 or visit the Health Department’s website at www.westchestergov.com/health.
