Coach Howard Jordan:Learning to Listen

If your child has been involved with rec basketball in the area, you know Coach Jordan …the mild-mannered man that can quiet down a gym full of rowdy boys with a voice barely above a whisper.  What you may not know, is that “Coach” has a new book.         Mommat and Me is an illustrated story of Howard Jordan’s childhood memories of his blind grandmother, Mommat, and her influence on him as a basketball and football player, a coach, and an advocate for youth sports.  Jordan wrote and illustrated the book, which is based on his childhood in Mamaroneck.   Jordan learned from his grandmother that the key to achieving a goal is to work hard and believe in yourself.  She said everyone should pursue their dreams as “nothing beats a failure but a try.”   The best sports advice Howard Jordan ever got was, “close your eyes and listen!”    Jordan went to Mamaroneck Avenue School, attended Hommocks the first year it opened, went on to Mamaroneck High School and then to Concordia College in Bronxville where he was an All-American in basketball, football and track.   While playing football and basketball at Concordia College, Jordan majored in Art, hoping to pursue his dream of becoming a cartoonist upon graduation. But his day of writing and illustrating books had to wait as he was picked up by the New York Giants.  Following a training season with Giants, he went semi-pro for a short time, and then finally played for the Baltimore Colts.

Sponsor Story: Working Out One2One

Sure there are Gym Floor Super Stars, dutifully devoted to the careful crafting of their near-perfect (read: enviable?) arms, abs and all that other stuff.     More of us, though, are fraught with a more ambivalent relationship with exercise, let alone with the bodies and minds physical activity is supposed to improve.  At its best, exercise is great – we walk out feeling fit, strong and a little bit naturally high from the rush that comes with pushing ourselves. At worst, it hurts like hell, either by rekindling old aches – or setting new ones in motion – or looming large like another gnawing pain on the To Do List.  But it doesn’t have to be that way, says Sean Fitzpatrick, who owns and runs One2One BodyScapes training in Mamaroneck.

MHS Girls’ Hockey’s Winning Streak

With lots of good news to celebrate so far this season, Varsity Field Hockey Coach John Savage couldn’t be happier.  The Mamaroneck High School team, which boasts a regular           season record of 14-2-1 this year and just beat Brewster 5-0 yesterday in the first round of Sectionals, looks promising heading into the quarter-finals; Coach Savage just recently captured his 200 th career win, and MHS senior Mady Despins was named Con Edison’s Athlete of the Week. “Mady is very deserving of this award.  She is willing to do things that others may not be willing to do to be successful, not only on the field but in life,” said Coach Savage, who has spent the last 15 years as head field hockey coach at Mamaroneck High School.  “We have lots to be proud of, and the team is in good shape as we begin Sectionals.”    With a strong tradition as a winning program, the Mamaroneck High School girls field hockey team has made it to Sectional finals for seven consecutive years, including four times as champions.  Con Ed Award winner Despins attributes much of this success to the hard work ethic that Coach Savage employs and to the teamwork and bonding he and the other coaches help foster among the players.  “Each year, Coach Savage’s team works just as hard as the last,” Despins says.  “He helps us build an amazing work ethic, getting each of us to work as hard as we can possibly work and never say ‘what if”….’what if I had worked just a bit harder?  Then, maybe we could have won that game.’” Despins explains that encouraging team bonding and getting to know each other both on and off the field has been part of the team’s culture for years.  “We have a tradition of a team dinner before every game.  The more you get to know each other off the field, the better you’ll know each other on the field and be able to predict what someone will do or what move they’ll make.  This translates into better play,” she says.   Anticipation builds as everyone wonders how far the team will go this year.  Coach Savage tells the team that getting through the Sectionals will be the toughest challenge.   “There are some good teams in the Section this year, but, as Coach Savage says, if we win the Sectionals, we’ve got a pretty good shot at winning States.  We have the ability to beat any team,” Despins says.  “Properly applying what we know how to do will be the key.”  Despins says beating Scarsdale, which was undefeated in the League, twice in one week was one of the season’s highlights.  Another highlight was receiving the Con Ed Award.  “I was totally surprised,” she said.  “They called me down to the athletic office and I thought it had something to do with the yellow card I received the day before (the one and only one she received in her field hockey career for telling the ref that the ball didn’t hit her foot).  It’s a great honor to receive this award.” The Con Edison Athlete of the Week recognizes students in Westchester and Putnam schools who excel athletically. Academic achievements, leadership, citizenship, school and community activities are also factors. The winner is selected each week by a panel of athletic directors and coaches who review ballots submitted by each athlete’s athletic director or coach.

In Mamaroneck school district           there have already been 4 concussed football players reported this year.  It is estimated that nationwide there may be as many as 3.8 million recreation and sports-related concussions every year.     Maybe you saw the shocking story of the University of Pennsylvania football player who committed suicide at the age of 21 and whose brain at autopsy showed signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE. CTE is the pathological finding that is coming to light in the brains of middle aged NFL players who suffer from dementia.  It is their devastating demise that has the NFL looking to more conservative policies on the field. With this finding in a young athlete we should all pause to consider.   Or maybe you saw the subsequent New York Times report on  results of a new study that quantified the number of “concussion grade” head impacts that happen during practices of amateur football players.

Fitness for Women after 40

Those of us who’ve surpassed a magic age–40? 50? may have been through the drill: friends feel it’s their  duty                  to give you the lowdown:  “Just wait until you reach 40 – your body will never be the same,” is a popular one.  “May as well spread that chocolate cake right onto your behind,” is another classic.  And then, there’s my personal favorite: “Once you reach 50, it’s all downhill from there.

It Must Be Love.

This year’s US Open theme?  It Must Be Love.  Was someone paid for this?  Considering the slogan it was no surprise that            I spent Monday night with Roger Federer. We got tickets for this year’s Open which began August 30th when my spouse and I happened to meet a guy –a TV producer that does reality weddings!—who had bought the full series package, and then kept the best stuff and sold the rest of the seats.  He was guaranteed finals tickets and overall better seating than individual ticket sales.  We picked Monday night a month ago—Round 4- of course not knowing who we were going to see. Thinking we were clever to purchase these, I found out after having attended Monday night’s session starring Roger, that there are a lot of people that are sitting courtside in corporate seats—neighbors, friends- trumping your little 2nd hand ticket purchase.  Why should this surprise me when your own grade school raffles off the front rows at school concerts so your kid can yell at you if you’re not the lucky parent that’s spitting distance from the action. Security is tight this year.  We had an easy drive over the Whitestone Bridge and paid $19.00 to park at Citi Field, taking just a few minutes to pass the subway overhead pass and onto the grounds.  But they didn’t open the gates until 6:20 for a 7:00 night session, forcing us to stand amongst grown-ups dressed in tennis outfits.  No, this isn’t a Mets game folks and you’re not six, which might make it perfectly ok to dress up like one of the ball players. Sadly there was talk amongst them of racing to the Ralph Lauren store inside the gates, one of the official sponsors who will happily outfit you in gear you can get for half price on the net, if you dare wear clothes with a pony the size of the real thing.

Ode to "Papa Joe"

In the past two weeks the New York Yankees have lost not two, but three greats. The former owner, George "The Boss" Steinbrenner and longtime announcer, Bob Sheppard both passed away in the same week. However, the third passing                     came on July 18, 2010. "Papa" Joseph Glaser, pitching coach for the Mamaroneck summer travel teams, died from complications following hip surgery. Papa Joe was born in the Bronx on July 29, 1941, attended Pace University and played in the New York Yankees minor league system in the 1960’s.

Mamaroneck Businesses offer Archery, Scuba

It’s not everywhere you can shoot a bow & arrow and become a certified scuba diver, but in Mamaroneck, within a mile radius,                you have both Extreme Archery and AquaVisions Scuba Ltd.,   Extreme Archery (801 East Boston Post Road) opened its doors in early June with a full pro shop boasting adult and child equipment, bow tune ups, custom and stock arrows and a 20-yard indoor archery range. With a second range being built downstairs, and an upcoming "Hunter’s League" for kids and adults, owner Tom Ardis says "the population is here…it’s the kind of thing that a 10-year-old kid can do and 65-year-old woman can do." Such a great potential population of archers, in fact, that Mr. Ardis believes the store will need to be expanded in a mere two years, simply from the demand he has seen thus far.      Although AquaVisions Scuba (118 West Boston Post Road)  has been a fixture in Mamaroneck for ten years, it did not gain much recognition until its move to its new location across the street from Harbor Island. The store carries all the necessities from wetsuits to diving tanks. The main draw to AquaVisions Scuba is the three week scuba diving certification course.

Paine to Pain Oct.3rd

Organizers of the Third Annual Paine to Pain 1/2 Marathon Trail Race are expecting a record number of runners for the Oct. 3 race that follows the                 Colonial Greenway through New Rochelle, Scarsdale, Eastchester, Mamaroneck and Larchmont. Now they’re focusing their attention on getting enough volunteers to ensure everything runs smoothly. "It’s because of this tremendous growth that we need more volunteers this year," race director Eric Turkewitz said.  "We want to put on the best event that we can for these communities." Turkewitz said the race already has 112 entries and he is expecting a total of 350 runners. Last year 191 runners finished, and 50 runners competed in the event’s first year.

Spina Classic Draws Hundreds

Hundreds of softball players and their families hit the fields at Harbor Island Park over the weekend to keep alive   he memory of a man who spent many of his 36 years on those very diamonds. Stephen Spina, who was found stabbed to death in his Richbell Road apartment on Sept. 17, 2007, was a beloved youth umpire and postal carrier in Larchmont. His murder remains unsolved, and proceeds from the Second Annual Stephen Spina Softball Classic are going to increase the New York State Crime Stoppers’ reward for information that leads to the arrest of his killer. Christine Foley, Spina’s sister and a co-organizer of the event, traveled from her Florida home to attend the tournament.

Unsolved: 2nd Annual Softball Game for Stephen Spina

John Boisitz will spend his weekend calling balls and strikes, calling runners safe or out, calling balls fair or foul. Just like he did for years with his friend Stephen Spina                   who was stabbed to death in his Richbell Road apartment on Sept. 17, 2007. The Second Annual Stephen Spina Softball Classic will be held this weekend at Harbor Island Park, and Boisitz, one of the event’s organizers, is hoping the tournament will help call attention to his unsolved murder. "Steve was a great guy," Boisitz said.

Raffle Saves Some Local School Sports

A small group gathered at the Nautilus Diner on Tuesday evening, and even before a single order was placed, the talk was all about the check.                Volunteers for the Tiger Team Booster Club were on their way to present the Mamaroneck School Board with a symbolic check for $30,000. The money had been raised through a raffle and was earmarked to reinstate sports programs that were cut from the 2010-2011 budget.   Although volunteer Diane Muratore had originally hoped to raise $100,000 to save all eight sports — the freshman football, baseball and boys basketball teams, the second modified field hockey, softball, volleyball and girls basketball teams and a second junior varsity boys soccer team — she was still celebrating the group’s success.   "We’re very pleased," she said.
