Father Robbed in Larchmont Walking from Train

LARCHMONT– Update:

Since the brazen robbery Tuesday night of a Larchmont father walking home from the train station, dozens of concerned and frightened families are informing each other to be aware in meetings and by email.

“He is ok although understandably traumatized,” reads one email to a group of families at the Murray Avenue School, which the victim’s child attends. The robbery was also discussed at a PTA Board meeting.

Town of Mamaroneck Police say the 45 year old Valley Road resident was approached from behind on Glenn Road at 10:20 pm Tuesday by a masked man who said he was armed with a gun. The robber told the victim to empty his pockets and hand over his backpack.

The 45 year old victim was not hurt.  The robber fled on Glenn Road toward North Chatsworth Ave., according to police, with a computer, an iPhone, a Kindle reader, credit cards, personal papers and $3 cash.

The robber is described as a possibly black male, 175 lbs, wearing dark clothes and a ski mask. Town of Mamaroneck Police have stepped up surveillance of the area as detectives investigate.

I accidentally stumbled upon site and post and it reminded me how glad I am that I don’t live thee anymore! Not just because of the crime, which can happen anywhere, although not where I live now. Or because of the memories of the incompetent bullies of the three redundant police forces, who couldn’t catch a cold, but obliged you to phone 3 different #s in different parts of town. The snarky, self aggrandizing comments posted critiquing the journalism, and silent as to the the incident reminded me of the smug self-importance that has overrun the place. I have a sense of humor, but you people desperately deserve each other.

amm83, I comment rarely and only with substance.

I was looking at the headline as journalism.  ”Pedestrian…walking home” would have been redundant (but you knew that). I appreciate the goal of bringing the meaning of a crime home, my point was the relevance in the headline. As “elizabeth said:” agreed – the word father in the headline was definitive. I wouldn’t expect anyone’s reproductive status as mattering more or less to the neighborhood in which they live – pity the Larchmont crime victim that is “just” a man.

I’ve always felt safe walking at night. I guess that was a false feeling. NYC radar needs to be activated at all times, I guess.

One can only imagine how many things the first poster finds to complain about each and every day.

  • we decided to change it to ‘father’ from ‘pedestrian’ because it sounded so, well, pedestrian… and impersonal. crimes like this impact families, friends, neighbors, too and we felt this brought that home.

Agreed. In fact, my ears perked-up when I thought perhaps it was a priest that had been robbed.

Did the man have his child or his children with him at the time?  If he did not have children, would the headline have read Childless Man Robbed in Larchmont Walking from Train?  I understand that the story is relevant to those living in the neighborhood, many of which are families with children, but in terms of journalism, reporting the news, is each person defined by having a child or not?
