LARCHMONT– My daughter’s lunch box had the same thing in it every day for almost this entire school year. A Nutella sandwich.
I finally gave in when every healthier option I could think of came home untouched. I was just grateful she was eating something.
That was then. This morning she assembled a fruit salad for her lunchbox after having granola for breakfast. What happened? Nothing short of a miracle.

Scottish singer songwriter Amy Belle has already achieved much in her career. She has performed with Rod Stewart on stage at the Royal Albert Hall in London in front of an audience of more than 5,000. She is also a prolific young writer and has had several of her songs covered by a number of other recording artists, including Miley Cyrus.
Her personal You Tube video hits count in the millions. Once a member of successful female three-piece The Alice Band, she has reunited with her former band mate Audrey Nugent to form the duo, Dolls.
After two years of writing together, Dolls have produced an album of beautifully crafted songs replete with symbolic, wonderfully heartfelt lyrics and their trademark heavenly harmonies, recorded at fellow Scottish songwriter KT Tunstall’s beautiful studio deep in the English countryside in February of this year.
On June 2nd 2012 they will be appearing for one night only at the Emelin Theatre in Mamaroneck as the first gig in the United States for their debut album.
They invite you to join them for a memorable evening of acoustic music played with heart and soul from the UK’s most up and coming artists. It will be a night of two halves; the evening will commence with a 45 minute solo set by Miss Belle playing some of the songs that have made her famous. She will be joined for the second half of the show by Audrey, when they will perform the songs from their Dolls debut album.

MAMARONECK– He’s Back. Our local Mount Rushmore.
A remarkable George Washington-like visage naturally carved into a big rock near Orienta, (or blasted by construction crews about 1890, depending on who you talk to,) once one of this area’s primary attractions, emerged from the weeds and vines Saturday at a ceremony conducted by Peter Fellows of the Mamaroneck Historical Society..
Located near the corner of Boston Post Road and Orienta Avenue, the Washington Rock is now on a slope adjacent to the Montessori School, across from Mamaroneck Harbor. The school is on the former site of an Inn named, appropriately, Washington Arms.
Here is the video of our trying to find the rock back in 2009:

‘Supermoon,’ Obscured by Clouds, Left Plenty to See
Those in New York looking to take photographs of the so-called supermoon had to make do with other amusements under a cloudy sky on Saturday night. More than 1,000 attend Sullivan family funeral in Carmel
More than 1,000 friends, neighbors, relatives and uniformed officers gathered at St. James the Apostle Church Saturday morning to pay their last respects to the Sullivan family, among them the sole survivor of the blaze that took the lives of his father, mother and two sisters.

There’s a growing rap sheet against the “commuter robber.”
Olivier Fanby, 19, will be charged by Harrison police in two robberies, and one each in the village and town of Mamaroneck, and in New Rochelle.
Famby is being held without bail. He was expected to be in Mamaroneck Town Court on Monday and in Harrision Town Court today. As LoHud reports:
Famby reportedly told Pelham detectives that he had planned to rob someone at the Larchmont station around 5 a.m. Friday, but didn’t see anybody who looked promising, so he drove to Pelham. He parked on Corlies Avenue, in a no-overnight parking zone.
Sgt. Christopher Casucci saw the parked car about 5:20 a.m. and knew it hadn’t been there earlier, Benefico said.
While he was writing a ticket, he noticed someone in the car and pulled up to talk to the driver. When he got out to investigate, he noticed a gun on the floor and black gloves.
PELHAM, LARCHMONT, MAMARONECK, HARRISON–Pelham police says a 19 year old New Rochelle man confessed Friday to the series of gunpoint robberies of commuters near train stations in several Sound Shore towns since January.
Police arrested Olivier Famby Friday when he was caught with a handgun that had been reported stolen in Pennsylvania.
LoHud reports Police say that Famby told them that he had been scouting out the area of the Larchmont train station for a potential victim prior to coming to Pelham on Friday. When Famby couldn’t find a suitable victim, he came to Pelham to see if he could spot one arriving into the Pelham station.

The timely issue of campaign finance in the midst of this presidential election year is the focus of the League of Women Voters annual luncheon at noon on Friday, April 27th at the Orienta Beach Club in Mamaroneck.
Susan Lerner, Executive Director of Common Cause NY, will tackle the controversial topic, “Money in Politics – Can Americans Beat the Odds and Establish Fairness in Campaign Finance?” at the luncheon that is co-sponsored by the LWV chapters of Larchmont-Mamaroneck, New Rochelle and Rye, Rye Brook and Port Chester.
The event is open to the public. To make a reservation, please mail a check for $45 payable to LWV Larchmont/Mamaroneck to LWV, PO Box 811, Larchmont, NY 10538. Please e-mail questions to lwv10538@aol.com.
Common Cause New York, and its national counterpart, is the citizen’s lobbyist for clean elections and ethical standards for our elected officials. CCNY is a leading force in the battle for honest and accountable government. This nonpartisan, nonprofit organization often works together with the League of Women Voters on public interest issues.
Susan Lerner was the executive director of the California Clean Money Campaign before assuming her current post as the executive director of Common Cause New York. She is a graduate of the University of Chicago and NYU School of Law.
The Sound Shore Leagues will invite local high school students chosen to participate in this year’s Students Inside Albany Conference (SIA) to report on their experience at the luncheon. Students from throughout the state participated in the League’s 4-day public policy training program March 25-28th in Albany. The program brought these student leaders together to educate them on how they can influence public policy and provided them with an opportunity to meet and shadow their elected representatives, debate current policy issues, tour the capitol, and more.
The League of Women Voters of the United States was founded in 1920 by suffragists who had organized over decades for passage of the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote. The League’s mission is to promote informed citizen participation in government. Membership is open to all citizens 18 and older, regardless of gender, and associate membership to noncitizens.

This food truck in Mt. Vernon actually replaced the shuttered restaurant, below, where it is parked.
MOUNT VERNON, MAMARONECK, PORT CHESTER — We love our street food. But not every town does. Port Chester and Mount Vernon, home to lots of food vendors, are considering very strict regs.
In Port Chester, Abendroth Avenue and Don Bosco Place and the parking lots on Highland Street and Marvin Place would be off limits.
MAMARONECK, WHITE PLAINS, CITY ISLAND–214 visits to a single Mamaroneck’s Toyo Sushi restaurant. On public money. Not to mention 95 visits to Mamaroneck Diner, 58 t0 Lum Yen, 44 to Red Plum and 53 to Larchmont’s Nautilus Diner.
Last month, federal prosecutors said that “Bronxchester” ex- State Senator Pedro Espada and his family spent about $60,000 on sushi and lobster meals.
The New York Post broke it down, reporting, “He billed his publicly funded health clinic about $103,000 for meals between 2005 and 2009, including more than $20,000 for a staggering 214 visits to a single sushi restaurant.”
Espada famously resided in Mamaroneck while representing the Bronx. And from the list above, it appears he only likes one Bronx restaurant, The Harbor, in City Island.
A big Rumorville for you today. We hear the Bellizzi Italian Restaurant is not renewing its lease in the Trader Joe’s Shopping Center in Larchmont, and that Trader Joe’s will be expanding into the space. (Bellizzi has a second location in Mt. Kisco.)
Calls to Bellizzi owner Ray Catena were not returned, however a Trader Joe’s manager confirmed the story, saying the expansion will occur, “eventually.”
One2One Bodyscapes in Mamaroneck invites Loop readers to its Spring Open House, Saturday April 21st from 12-4 pm. Come visit their beautiful studio overlooking the water, and meet Sean, Laurie and the other skilled personal trainers there.
There will be great food (from Andy’s Pure Foods) and learn from experts about golf, acupuncture and chiropractic medicine.
In response to our story on the centuries-old Tompkins Oak in Mamaroneck, and plans to dig flood mitigation pipes near it, Village Manager Richard Slingerman sent theLoop a copy of this letter to the Village of Mamaroneck from the Cornell Cooperative Extension regarding the CCE’s inspection of the tree.
It appears the Village is also interested in trying to preserve it:
Have a look at this tree. The Tompkins Farm Oak has stood on Beach Avenue and Pine Street in Mamaroneck Village since before the Revolutionary War.
Noah Tompkins’ barns are gone, but the Oak remains…and neighbors worry plans by the Village to install pipes below Pine Street could severely damage the tree. The area is prone to flooding and a project to install the pipes is currently under bid.
In our story last week, below, we mentioned the Johnson Truck was expecting another Lil’ Johnson Jr.
A baby boy arrived this morning weighing in at 8 lbs., 9 oz. Bigger than a Po’ Boy, that’s for sure. Congrats!
I just had an almost perfect New Orleans style bowl of Red Beans and Rice. The brown sauce had just the right amount of Cajun seasoning.
It was served from a truck.
One of the things, I always say, that makes a town world class, is the ability to access gourmet grub on wheels. Look at these sites devoted just to street food in New York, Portand, Ore., and Washington, DC.
The big green comfort cookery parks at Harbor Island Park most days (though Mrs. Johnson is about to deliver a baby, so there may be a slight hiatus) and has a license to be here until Fall. It’s near the playground at the moment, but will move beach side come summer.
Swing around to the window and you’re greeted by Chef Johnson and Lil’ Johnson Jr. sporting chef hats and spouting expressions like “come y’all and feel our fine funky flavors!”
There’s blackened shrimp, chili, etouffee, grits, and hot dogs for the kids. “Johnson Jambalaya,” “Momma’s Creole Lobsta Roll” and plenty of meals for “Vegematarians.”
The video below was submitted to the Food Network Eat St. contest last year, where chef came in first in the US, but lost the contest to a Canadian contestant. Must watch!
Chef wanes philosophic. “I’ve always said, Canadians are people too.”
The Town of Mamaroneck, the Village of Mamaroneck, the Village of Larchmont and the City of Rye are joining forces for the Sound Shore “No Idling Day” on April 23. 2012.
The idea is to educate everyone about the harmful effects of engine idling and the local laws prohibiting it.
Town of Mamaroneck Supervisor Nancy Seligson writes,
“Idling vehicles create air pollution that is hazardous to human health, especially children. Idling wastes gasoline and damages the environment. The US EPA has identified idling as a major contributor to particulate material emissions. Exposure to vehicle exhaust increases the risk of cancer, lung disease and asthma. Children are particularly vulnerable to air pollution because their lungs are still developing and they breathe more air per pound of body weight than adults do.”
