Nancy White, owner of The Flower Bar in Larchmont, is spending her days in full-on decorating  right now. And she’s got a hit on her hands.

“One of our customers asked for holiday arrangement including amaryllis so we created one and we didn’t expect to get such positive feedback, but it really took off. People just want something different.”

The unique “living garden” design White creates consists of amaryllis bulbs, frosted fern, and cyclamen accented with red dogwood branches, pine cones and holiday greens.Amaryllis

White and her staff buy the plants in plastic pots and combine them in wooden or tin window box styles in different sizes and prices.  In the store they are grouped on one table, which shows them off. The effect is quite charming.

A savvy business woman as well as a talented floral designer, White is a former advertising executive and founder of Showhouse magazine. She reinvented herself a few years ago after completing a certificate in Floral Design at the New York Botanical Garden. She found a new career that  combines her creative eye with her business acumen.

For the amaryllis arrangement, the labor cost is very low, as are the prices for all the elements. But White explains, “The key is that we are offering something you can’t get anywhere else – we always like to offer extra value and this fits the bill.”

At the store on Addison Street there’s a party room where groups can have their own ‘wine and design’ event or  a special girls’ night out. White also serves as an instructor at the Botanical Garden’s Adult Education program.

Would-be flower arrangers take note: White’s upcoming one-day workshop on March 21 at the Botanical Garden will focus on very practical topics such as identifying and locating materials and tools, plus the planning skills needed to work with clients and suppliers for a thriving business.
