RYE BROOK–Did you hear that a black bear was spotted in Rye Brook last week?

Rye Brook police are advising residents to be on the lookout after a black bear was spotted near the Connecticut border Tuesday evening.

They don’t know if it’s the same bear  that was reportedly tranquilized  in Greenwich, Conn. recently.

The Rye Brook sighting was on North Ridge Street near King Street and the Hutchinson River Parkway.

“The animals generally encounter humans while looking for food, often at bird feeders, garbage areas at restaurants and campsites,” according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

  1. Most of Westchester is suburbs, with that there are many wild animals in our neighborhoods. This is just another reason for residents to take precautions while walking pets and making sure small children playing outside are not left unattended.
Many of us have never had to “stop-drop-roll” but we all have been taught what to do in the event of a fire and how to take precautions. It is also important to teach children (and adults) what to do if they encounter a bear or coyote, as well as how to prevent encounters. Even though it is very unlikely to happen, like anything else in life, its always better to be educated and prepared.
