Just slightly more than a week after urging residents to be on guard, Rye police have discovered an ATM card skimmer at a local bank.
The skimmer found at the HSBC Bank on Purchase Street is the fifth device of its kind discovered recently in Westchester. Similar illegal set-ups, which also include hidden cameras, have been found at bank machines in Bronxville, Pelham, Yonkers and Poughkeepsie.
The skimmers record information from a user’s ATM card and the cameras record the user’s PIN as it is punched in on the ATM keypad.
The Rye Police Department issued an alert on Sunday, advising ATM users to take precautions when using their bank cards. Those precautions include:
- Before inserting your card into the slot of an ATM, wiggle the slot. Normal ATM slots should not wiggle, but a skimmer installed on the slot may seem loose.
- Cover the keypad with your free hand while keying in your PIN, so if a hidden camera is installed it will not be able to record the number.
- Always be aware of your surroundings when making an ATM transaction, and be alert for suspicious activity or people loitering nearby.
