The Conservatory of Dance at Purchase College, SUNY presents its 2012 Spring Dance Concert — a rare opportunity for audiences to enjoy an unparalleled performance and the choreography of four distinguished artists in a single program.  From April 27 – 29, 2012, the Purchase Dance Company will perform pieces by Lar Lubovitch, Stephen Petronio, Mark Morris and Jessica Lang.   All performances will be held on campus at The Performing Arts Center.

The four major pieces to be performed are:

·      Lar Lubovitch’s Dvorak Serenade (2007).  This dance has been described as a “lush and sweeping ensemble work” which the Chicago Tribune called “flowing and transcendent.”  Lar Lubovitch has been singled out by the New York Times as “one of the best ten choreographers in the world.”

·      Stephen Petronio’s Lareigne (1995).  The Observer of London called this piece  “sharply modern, but its broken curves and ornate flourishes have a formal, late-baroque quality, too.   It could be set to the music of Rameau as easily as to the Stranglers.”  Petronio is widely regarded as one of the leading dance-makes of his generation.

·      Mark Morris’s Polka (1992) has been described by one enthusiastic theater blogger for Saturday Matinee in San Francisco as a “communal dance reflecting a peasant dance of sorts, with dancers in a circle stomping to the music and throwing their hands up in the air, every second packed with something different to see.  It is a delightful romp, masterfully constructed and an absolute joy.”

·      In Jessica Lang’s Prayers, set to excerpts from Pergolesi’s ‘Stabat Mater,’ the choreographer “sets nine women in flowing, counterpointed groups around lines or circles of wooden chairs,” according to a review in The New York Times.  Ms. Lang has been described as creating dances that are “artfully crafted, emotionally engaging works.”

The concerts are being performed at Purchase on Friday, April 27, 2012 at 8 PM; Saturday, April 28 at 2 PM and 8 PM; and Sunday April 29, 2 PM.   For additional information and tickets please visit www.purchase.edu  or call 914.251.6200.
